Bollywood Film Locations in Kashmir Worth Visiting

Ask a shikara rower on Dal Lake which film made his trade famous and he will probably hum a few bars before you finish the question.

Ask a shikara rower on Dal Lake which film made his trade famous and he will probably hum a few bars before you finish the question. For two decades from the early 1960s, Hindi cinema came to Kashmir whenever it wanted romance, snow or a song on water, and a whole generation of Indian travellers first saw the valley through a cinema screen. Bollywood film locations in Kashmir are still some of the most visited spots in the region, and many of them are easy to reach in a day.

I have spent seasons tracking down these places with old songs on my phone, and the honest verdict is mixed. Some look almost exactly as they did on screen. Others have changed so much that the trip only makes sense if you go for the landscape rather than the frame. Here is how to tell which is which, and how to see them without wasting a day in a taxi.

Why Kashmir Became Hindi Cinema's Favourite Backdrop

Before foreign shoots became affordable, Kashmir offered everything a producer wanted within a short drive of Srinagar: lakes, meadows, pine forest and real snow. Films such as Kashmir Ki Kali in 1964 and Jab Jab Phool Khile in 1965 turned the houseboat and the shikara into national symbols of romance.

Shooting largely stopped after 1989 as the valley entered years of unrest, and producers moved to Switzerland and New Zealand for their mountains. From the 2010s, crews began returning. If you want the longer story of why the valley's own film industry never grew alongside these shoots, our piece on why Kashmiri cinema never quite became Bollywood covers it.

Dal Lake and the Houseboat Romances

Dal Lake is where most of the classic songs were filmed, and it remains the easiest location to enjoy. Kashmir Ki Kali placed its most famous number on a shikara gliding across the water, and Jab Jab Phool Khile cast its hero as a houseboat boy rowing visitors around the lake.

What has changed is the crowding. The open water of the 1960s now has floating markets, more houseboats and heavy shikara traffic near the boulevard ghats. For something close to the old look, hire a shikara at first light, around 6 am in summer, and ask to go toward the quieter Nigeen side. A one hour ride is usually enough for photographs, and agreeing the price before you step in avoids an awkward finish.

Pahalgam, Betaab Valley and Aru

Pahalgam has the strongest claim on Bollywood. The 1983 film Betaab was shot so extensively in the Hagan valley that locals renamed it Betaab Valley, and the name stuck on signboards and maps. It sits about 15 km from Pahalgam town on the road toward Chandanwari, with the Lidder river running through a flat green meadow ringed by pine slopes.

Aru valley, around 12 km in the other direction, has featured in several newer films, including parts of Highway in 2014. It is the more peaceful of the two and a common starting point for treks.

Getting around Pahalgam

Local sightseeing runs on union taxis. A car hired in Srinagar will drop you in Pahalgam, but for Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari you will usually need to take a local taxi from the union stand, at rates posted there. Plan both valleys in one morning. More on the town itself is in our Pahalgam valley guide.

Gulmarg and the Hut From Bobby

Gulmarg hosted Bobby in 1973, and one small wooden hut where a famous song was filmed is still pointed out to visitors as the Bobby Hut. It is a modest building, and if you arrive expecting a film set you will be underwhelmed. The meadow and the views toward the Pir Panjal range are the real draw.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan, released in 2012, brought cameras back to Gulmarg and Pahalgam and helped prove that big productions could return. In winter the same slopes turn into a ski resort, which gives you two very different versions of one location.

Haider and the Ruins at Martand

For a darker kind of cinema, Haider in 2014 used real Kashmiri streets and landscapes rather than postcard views. Its haunting song Bismil was staged among the stone ruins of the Martand Sun Temple near Anantnag, about 60 km south of Srinagar.

The temple dates from the 8th century and is worth the trip for its own sake. Go in the late afternoon when the low light shows the carved stone at its best. Pair it with a stop at the spring town of Mattan nearby, and you have a half day that most tourists skip entirely.

Planning Bollywood Film Locations in Kashmir by Base

The usual advice is to make a checklist of films and tick off every location. I would push back on that. Many scenes were stitched together from several places, some were shot on sets, and a few famous spots are now fenced, crowded or simply unrecognisable. Chasing exact angles can mean four hours in a car for a photograph that does not match.

A better approach is to pick a base and enjoy the cluster around it:

BaseFilm connectionsTime needed
SrinagarKashmir Ki Kali, Jab Jab Phool Khile, HaiderOne day plus a half day trip
PahalgamBetaab, Highway, Jab Tak Hai JaanOne full day
GulmargBobby, Jab Tak Hai JaanHalf to one day

Download the songs before you leave Srinagar, because mobile data in the high valleys can be patchy. Playing the right track at the right meadow is half the fun, and the shikara rowers and pony guides often know which spot matches which scene better than any blog.

FAQ

Which Bollywood films were shot in Kashmir?

Classics include Kashmir Ki Kali, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Bobby and Betaab. Newer productions such as Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Highway and Haider brought crews back after a long gap.

What is the best season to visit film locations in Kashmir?

May to early October gives the green meadows seen in most songs. Winter suits Gulmarg's snow scenes, but some roads around Pahalgam and Aru can close after heavy snowfall.

Is Betaab Valley worth visiting if I have not seen the film?

Yes. The river meadow and pine slopes are beautiful on their own, and it is an easy stop on the way to Chandanwari from Pahalgam.

The Practical Takeaway

The best way to see Bollywood film locations in Kashmir is to group them by base: Dal Lake and Martand from Srinagar, Betaab and Aru from Pahalgam, and the meadows of Gulmarg on a separate day. Go early, agree prices first, and treat the films as an excuse to see the landscape rather than a list to complete.
