Cash and UPI in Kashmir and How Much to Carry Each Day

A family from Pune once told me they spent their second morning in Pahalgam walking between three ATMs, all out of cash, while the pony operators waited. They had cards, they had UPI on their phones and they still could not pay for the ride they had planned for months. That small scene explains most of what visitors get wrong about money in the valley.

Cash and UPI in Kashmir work side by side, and which one you need depends far more on where you are standing than on what you are buying. In Srinagar's markets you can scan a code almost everywhere. Two hours up the road, a single rupee note can matter more than a full phone battery. Here is how I plan payments for a week in the valley, and how much I carry each day.

How Cash and UPI in Kashmir Divide the Valley

Think of the valley in three bands. Srinagar, with its hotels, restaurants and shops along Residency Road and in Lal Chowk, is close to any mid sized Indian city: UPI QR codes at most counters, cards at hotels and larger stores, and ATMs on many streets.

The resort towns, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, sit in the middle band. Hotels and many restaurants take cards or UPI, but ponies, sledges, local guides and small tea stalls often prefer cash. ATMs exist but are few, and in peak weeks they empty quickly.

Villages, meadow trails and high passes are the third band. Mobile data can be weak or absent, which makes UPI useless even where the seller would happily accept it. Here, cash is the only reliable option.

A Daily Cash Budget That Actually Works

I suggest carrying enough notes for the things that rarely take digital payment, and leaving the rest on your phone. For two adults, a rough daily cash float looks like this.

Where you areTypical cash needsSuggested float for two
Srinagar city dayAuto rickshaws, street snacks, small tips1,000 to 1,500 rupees
Shikara and old city dayBoat ride, floating market, small purchases2,000 to 3,000 rupees
Gulmarg or Pahalgam dayPonies, guides, sledges, local snacks4,000 to 6,000 rupees
Sonamarg or trek dayPonies, guides, dhaba meals4,000 to 7,000 rupees

These are floats, not spending targets. Most days you will come back with notes left over, and that is the point. Rates for ponies and guides in the resort towns are usually fixed by local authorities and posted at the stands, so check the board before you agree, and pay the posted amount.

Where UPI Works Well

In Srinagar I pay for almost everything by scanning a code: bakeries, pharmacies, cafes and most handicraft shops. Many shikara owners and houseboat families now have QR codes too, often taped to the side of a cash box. The shops I recommend in our guide to shopping in Srinagar nearly all accept UPI for larger purchases such as shawls and papier mache.

Two habits help. Ask before you start that the seller accepts UPI, rather than at the end, and wait to see the payment confirmed on their phone or speaker before walking away. A short delay is normal when the network is busy in the evening.

Visitors from abroad face a different picture. UPI normally needs an Indian bank account, so most foreign travellers rely on cards at hotels and cash everywhere else. Change money at your arrival airport or through an authorised money changer in Srinagar, and bring enough to cover the resort towns, where foreign cards are the first thing a struggling ATM tends to refuse.

ATMs, Cards and the Trouble With Peak Season

Common travel advice says you can always withdraw at the destination, so carry little cash for safety. In much of India that is sensible. In Kashmir in May, June or the Christmas to New Year rush, I disagree.

The handful of ATMs in Pahalgam and Gulmarg serve thousands of visitors a day in peak weeks, and running dry by afternoon is not unusual. Sonamarg has even fewer. The sensible approach is to withdraw in Srinagar before you leave for the resort towns, where you have dozens of machines to choose from.

  • Withdraw in Srinagar the evening before a day trip, not the morning of.
  • Split cash between two people and two bags.
  • Keep a few 100 and 200 rupee notes, because pony handlers and small stalls rarely have change for a 500.
  • Tell your bank about the trip if you use a foreign card, and expect that some machines will not accept it.

When the Network Drops

Mobile connectivity in Kashmir can be patchy in the mountains, and the authorities sometimes restrict mobile internet for security reasons. When that happens, UPI stops working for everyone at once. Shops that took digital payments the day before are suddenly cash only.

Prepaid SIM cards from other Indian states generally do not work in Jammu and Kashmir, so visitors relying on a prepaid number may find themselves offline on arrival. A postpaid connection is the usual workaround. We cover phones and apps in more detail in our post on the tech that makes travel smoother.

Tipping and Bargaining Without Awkwardness

Tipping is welcome rather than expected. A hundred or two hundred rupees for a shikara rower who went out of his way, or for a pony handler who walked your nervous child the whole way, is generous and appreciated. Cash is still the cleanest way to tip, even where the main bill went on UPI.

Bargaining is normal in markets for handicrafts and souvenirs, but not at places with printed prices, at bakeries or for services with posted government rates. Paying by UPI does not change the price; agree on the figure first, then scan.

FAQ

Do houseboats accept card payments?

Many larger houseboats accept cards or bank transfer for the room, and most now take UPI. Smaller family run boats may prefer cash or UPI only, so ask when you book and keep some notes for meals or extras.

Can I pay for the Gulmarg Gondola in cash?

Gondola tickets are usually booked online in advance, especially in peak season, and paying digitally is easiest. Keep cash for the pony or walk between the gondola stations and the town.

Is it safe to carry several thousand rupees?

Kashmir's markets and resort towns are generally safe for visitors carrying a day's cash. The usual care applies: split it, keep it in an inside pocket, and do not count notes in a crowd.

The Simple Rule I Follow

Use UPI in Srinagar, carry cash outside it. Withdraw before you travel up, keep small notes, and never let the plan for a pony ride or a remote meadow depend on a phone signal. Pair that with the cost estimates in our budget trip to Kashmir guide, and money will be the last thing you think about on the trail.
