Kashmir Tulip Festival Guide for First Time Visitors

Most visitors hear about the Kashmir tulip festival from a single photo of endless red and yellow rows against the mountains, then discover the garden is open for only a few weeks a year. Book too early and you see bare beds.

Most visitors hear about the Kashmir tulip festival from a single photo of endless red and yellow rows against the mountains, then discover the garden is open for only a few weeks a year. Book too early and you see bare beds. Book too late and the petals are on the ground. With a little planning, though, the timing is easier to get right than it looks.

I have covered the festival for several springs, both on the busy opening days and on quiet weekday mornings near the end. This is what a first time visitor needs to know about dates, tickets, crowds and the music and food that make it more than a flower show.

What the Kashmir tulip festival is

The festival takes place at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, on the lower slopes of the Zabarwan range above Dal Lake. The garden, once known as Siraj Bagh, covers around 30 hectares laid out in terraces, and it is often described as the largest tulip garden in Asia.

In recent seasons the gardeners have planted around 1.5 to 1.7 million bulbs across more than 70 varieties. Alongside the tulips you will find hyacinths, daffodils and ranunculus in smaller beds. The Jammu and Kashmir tourism department organises the festival itself, which adds stage performances, handicraft stalls and food counters to the usual garden visit.

When to go for the best bloom

The garden usually opens to the public in the last week of March or the first days of April and stays open for about three to four weeks. The formal festival programme tends to run through the first half of April.

Bloom depends on the weather. A warm March brings the flowers forward, while a cold spell or late snow on the Zabarwan slopes can delay them by a week. Watch local news in Srinagar from mid March, when the opening date is announced.

  • Opening week: early varieties in full colour, later beds still in bud. The busiest days of the season.
  • Second and third weeks: usually peak, with most beds open at once.
  • Final week: fading early varieties, but late tulips still strong and far fewer people.

Tickets, timings and getting there

Tickets are sold at the gate and, in some years, online through the tourism department. Entry has been around Rs 75 for adults and Rs 30 for children in recent seasons, so carry small notes or have UPI ready. Mobile signal near the gate can be patchy on busy days.

The garden is generally open from about 9 am to 7 pm. It sits next to the Botanical Garden and a short drive from Cheshma Shahi. From the Dal Lake boulevard, an auto rickshaw takes 15 to 20 minutes and should cost a few hundred rupees; agree the fare before you get in. On festival weekends, traffic on the approach road can add another half hour.

Music, crafts and food at the festival

The entertainment side is what separates festival days from an ordinary visit. A stage near the main lawns hosts afternoon and evening performances, and the line-up changes from day to day.

Expect Sufiana music played on the santoor and setar, chakri ensembles with harmonium and rabab, and groups of women performing folk dances. If the women's circle dance catches your eye, our piece on Rouf dance in Kashmir explains its meaning and where else to see it. Some years also feature short comic sketches drawn from the tradition of Bhand Pather folk theatre, often in Kashmiri with plenty of physical comedy that needs no translation.

Handicraft stalls along the lower terraces sell papier mache boxes, crewel cushion covers and shawls. Prices here are fixed by each seller and can be higher than in the old city, so treat the stalls as a preview and buy the bigger pieces in Srinagar's markets. Food counters serve kahwa, noon chai, and snacks such as fried lotus stem and girda bread. A cup of kahwa at around 4 pm, while the light softens, is one of the best moments of the day.

Why the official festival dates are not always the best time

Most travel advice tells you to plan your trip around the official festival dates. I usually suggest the opposite: aim for the garden, not the programme.

The inauguration day and the first weekend bring the largest crowds of the season, VIP movement that closes paths, and long queues at the gate. Many of the later varieties are not even open yet. The tulips are planted in staggered groups, early, mid and late, precisely so the garden stays in colour for weeks.

A weekday visit in the second or third week usually gives you fuller beds, room to walk the terraces and better photos without strangers in every frame. You may miss a headline concert, but stage performances continue on many days, and Srinagar has other places to hear live Kashmiri music in spring.

Practical tips for a comfortable visit

  • Bring a warm layer. April mornings in Srinagar can start around 8 degrees Celsius, even when afternoons reach 20. See our list of what to pack for Kashmir for spring.
  • Wear shoes with grip. The terraces are on a slope, and paths get muddy after rain.
  • Do not step into the beds for photos. Staff will ask you to leave the flowers alone, and a trampled row cannot be replanted that season.
  • Allow at least two hours. Rushing through in 40 minutes means missing the upper terraces, which have the best view of Dal Lake.
  • Combine the visit with Cheshma Shahi or Pari Mahal nearby, ideally in the morning before the heat of the day.

Frequently asked questions

When is the tulip festival in Kashmir?

The festival usually runs in the first half of April, with the garden opening in late March or early April. Exact dates change every year with the weather. Check announcements from mid March before booking flights.

How much is the entry fee for the Srinagar tulip garden?

In recent seasons the fee has been around Rs 75 for adults and Rs 30 for children. Prices can change from year to year. Carry cash or UPI, since card machines at the gate are not always working.

Is the Kashmir tulip festival worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you go on a weekday morning near peak bloom. The scale of the garden against the mountains is striking, and the music and craft stalls add a cultural side to the visit. Avoid the opening weekend if you dislike crowds.
